CPI Linear Position Sensors and Its Many Applications

1

We introduced our first LVDT based position sensors back in 1997 and gathered much information on how to refine and extend this innovative technology in many diverse industrial applications. CPI sensors are used in many industrial applications where long stroke lengths, reliable operation and design flexibility are vital requirements.

Used in Steel Foundries

Steel fabrication and foundry operations demand powerful hydraulic cylinders with accurate position sensing which is provided by our SL series linear position sensor.   SL series are being used more and more instead of traditional rod-type sensors because magnetostrictive sensors do not stand up to the extreme high temperatures and are sensitive to EMI. To increase their life span some manufacturers have even tried installing cooling jackets on the cylinders, but these modifications still do not allow mangnetostrictive sensors to last as long and perform as robustly as our SL Series. Our SL series sensors can operate in temperatures up to 257F while the absolute maximum temp for magnetostrictive sensors is 185F. SL series sensors feature both reliability and accuracy, and are intrinsically more immune to vibration and EMI

Used in an Oil Refinery

Another example of our sensor’s flexibility can be seen in its use in oil refinery equipment. In this application the SL series position sensor was part of a valve control system used in the coking process. There are particularly high temperatures in this application, making rod-type magnetostrictive sensors all but unusable.

Used in Piston Accumulators

This is one of the most interesting applications of SL series sensors. As most engineers know, a hydraulic accumulator is all about the pre-charge pressure. The typical gas-charged piston accumulator has a free-floating piston with seals to separate the liquid and gas.  Manufacturers have tried to use pressure and flow sensors, which do not provide true piston position due to inevitable system losses around the seals. They’ve even designed rod-type sensors into a few applications, which require substantial design accommodations, and the addition of another leak point where the probe passes through the piston.

The SL series sensor has none of these drawbacks and enters the accumulator through a single SAE size 8 fluid port and attaches to a 7/16-20 hole machined into the piston. The cable is connected to an LVDT that provides a continuous and absolute analog or digital output signal indicative of the piston location.

Uses on Oil And Gas Exploration

Telescoping hydraulic cylinders are often used to change the height of platforms on land based drilling rigs. CPI SL series are the only sensors that operate on these massive telescoping cylinders and can handle stroke lengths up to 7 meters long.
